HOW IT WORKS

In order to determine the percentage of THC in marijuana (THC /CBD), a small amount of marijuana or its derivatives is mixed with the test liquid, then this mixture is pipetted onto a plate coated with a layer of silica (TLC plate). The TLC plate is placed at the bottom of the developing solvent pool. In the mobile phase, the developing solvent or carrier liquid slowly rises up the TLC plate by capillary action. As the solvent moves up the TLC plate, it will pass through your drop of test material and each component of the test drop will differ in solubility and absorbance. Various components will be transferred to the TLC plate, some farther than others.

The TLC plate is removed from the developing solvent when the solvent reaches the top of the plate. The TLC plate is dried for 3 minutes and then the dye is sprayed, providing a visual profile of the test drop components. Each cannabinoid shows up as a distinct color at a different location on the TLC plate.
